Course Synopsis

This course is a continuation of other measurement courses in the department. Other measurement courses had looked at measurement of building carcass. In this course, the students are exposed to detail measurement of services in buildings especially in the areas of mechanical installations. Furthermore students are introduced to the principles and methods of specification writing. Topics to be covered include measurement of demolition and alterations, spot items, mechanical engineering measurement- rain water and sanitary installations. Cold and hot water installations like pipe work, and sundries. Fire-fighting and hydraulic installation, compressed air and gas installations including the pipe work, equipment, installation and sundries. Principles and methods involved in the compilation of a specification for building and other engineering works. Objectives and purpose of specification. The specification as a contract document; legal tender; and working aspects. Schedules, sources of information, references. Outright and performance specifications, the use of prime cost and provisional sums.

Course Synopsis

This course is an explanatory, designed primarily for students in quantity surveying discipline. However, it also meets the need of students in other environmental study fields, as a course that provides training on cost computation and prediction. The focus of the course is to impart useful skills in the students in order to enhance their cost forecasting and prediction with respect to deployment of scarce construction resources at higher levels. Topics to be covered include forecasting factors involved to determine pricing levels and cost limits, cost analysis as a design tool and choice of element, preparation of brief and detailed cost analysis, principles of building cost index and uses of cost index, cost planning principles, techniques and preparation of cost plan; and practical application of cost control techniques during design and construction processes.

This course is descriptive, the course in construction contract administration is designed primarily for students in quantity surveying and allied disciplines. The focus is to impart useful skills on the students in order to enhance their theory of quantity surveying and prepare them for contract administration after graduating from the University. Topics to be covered include: Principles of Professional Conducts and misconducts and professional indemnity,insurance, preparation of tender documents.Variation and interim certificates preparation of sub-contractors accounts, variation and day work. This course includes description of the production process, raw materials, equipment/components and supporting ancillaries in the following industrial facilities: Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant (train) and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPGD) Refinery and petrochemical plant, Tank farms (oil depots). Flow stations and oil pipeline, Light and heavy engineering manufacturing e.g. machine tools, tractors, equipment, Power plant/station (hydro/thermal /gas/wind/solar/etc). This course deal with the act of determines the size, quantity or amount of items in Electrical and Mechanical services drawings and is for students in quantity surveying. The course provides training in the interpretation of drawing and the focus is to impart useful skills on the students in order enhance their ability to prepare bills of quantities for electrical and mechanical engineering services. Topics to be covered include measurement of electrical equipment and control gear; conduit; trucking; cables and conductors; fittings and accessories to be grouped according to power distribution; lighting; heating; ventilation and air conditioning; telephones; bells chalets; sound distribution; signals; fire alarms; burglar-alarms etc. The mechanical engineering services measurement include rain water and sanitary installation; cold and hot water installation including the pipe work; fire-fighting and hydraulic installation; compressed air and gas installation including pipe work and sundries; equipment installation and sundries.
